Match Preview
Barcelona will aim to maintain their perfect start to the La Liga season when they face winless Getafe at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Wednesday. Barcelona currently sits four points clear at the top of the league, while Getafe struggles near the relegation zone.
Barcelona Overview
Under new manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona has enjoyed a dominant start, winning all six of their league matches. After three consecutive 2-1 victories, they found their scoring touch, demolishing Valladolid 7-1 and Girona 4-1, followed by a 5-1 win over Villarreal despite coming off a disappointing Champions League loss to Monaco.
In their win against Villarreal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha both netted braces, while Pablo Torre scored his first La Liga goal. However, the victory was marred by a serious knee injury to goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who ruptured his patella tendon and is expected to be out long-term.
Barcelona remains a formidable force at home, having dropped only two points in their last 10 league matches at Estadi Olímpic. They've been particularly strong against Getafe, winning their last six home encounters, scoring 16 goals, and conceding only four.
Getafe Overview
Getafe is one of two sides yet to register a win this season, managing four draws and two defeats from their opening six matches. Despite their struggles in the attack, scoring only three goals, Getafe has remained defensively solid, conceding fewer goals than most teams in La Liga.
Their last outing saw them salvage a 1-1 draw against Leganés in the South of Madrid derby, courtesy of a late Borja Mayoral penalty. However, Getafe’s winless streak in the league has now stretched to 11 matches, dating back to April.
A win against Barcelona seems a tall order, but Getafe will hope to earn at least a point in a fixture where their last success came back in 2018.
Team News
Barcelona will have to make do without several key players, including Ter Stegen, who has undergone surgery. Inaki Peña will step in as the starting goalkeeper. Other absentees include Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo, and Fermin Lopez.
Flick is likely to rotate his squad after the Villarreal match, with Pau Cubarsi, Alejandro Balde, and Marc Casado expected to return. Ferran Torres will also be available after serving a one-match suspension. Robert Lewandowski, fresh off equaling the record for most La Liga goals scored by a Polish player (48), will continue to lead the attack.
Getafe, meanwhile, could welcome back Nabil Aberdin from injury, though Álvaro Rodríguez remains a doubt with an ankle problem. Alex Sola and Carles Pérez are pushing for starts, while Borja Mayoral could make his first start since returning from injury after coming off the bench in the last two matches.
