Match Preview

Real Madrid will be eager to secure their first victory of the 2024-25 La Liga campaign as they host newly-promoted Real Valladolid at the Bernabeu on Sunday. Despite a successful start to the season by winning the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta, Carlo Ancelotti's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca in their opening league match. Rodrygo's early goal was canceled out by Vedat Muriqi's equalizer, leaving Los Blancos with just a point from their first outing. With upcoming fixtures against Las Palmas and Real Betis before the September international break, Madrid will look to build momentum with a win.

Real Valladolid Looking to Build on Winning Start

Real Valladolid, on the other hand, began their La Liga return with a 1-0 victory over Espanyol, thanks to Raul Moro's first-half strike. Newly promoted after finishing second in the Segunda Division last season, Paulo Pezzolano’s side has been busy in the transfer market, adding ten new faces, including Juanmi Latasa and Mario Martin from Real Madrid. Despite a positive start, Valladolid face a daunting task against the reigning champions, having lost their last five league matches against Madrid, including a 6-0 defeat in their most recent encounter in April 2023.

Team News and Lineups

Real Madrid have been dealt a blow with Jude Bellingham sidelined until the end of September due to a leg injury, joining David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga on the injury list. Ferland Mendy is also unavailable following a red card against Mallorca, likely paving the way for Fran Garcia to start at left-back. Luka Modric is expected to replace Bellingham in midfield, while the front three should feature Rodrygo, Kylian Mbappe, and Vinicius Junior.

For Real Valladolid, Anuar Tuhami remains out with a hernia, while Andre Ferreira is available again after serving a suspension. Kenedy could return from a fitness issue, but Pezzolano is likely to stick with the same lineup that secured victory over Espanyol. Mamadou Sylla, who netted eight league goals last season, is expected to lead the line in a 4-5-1 formation, supported by Raul Moro and Amath Ndiaye on the flanks.
